Celebrating 40 years of Volunteers' Week

To mark Volunteers' Week  2024, we celebrated volunteering across the Scottish Borders.

Volunteer Community Champions

To mark 40 years of Volunteers' Week, we held our very first Community Volunteer Champion Awards. People across the Borders nominated their champion and told us why they deserve the title of Volunteer Community Champion 2024.

We received so many amazing nominations it was difficult to select the finalists! Our panel took hours to select 3 finalists from each of the localities, Berwickshire, Cheviot, Eildon, Teviot and Liddesdale, and Tweeddale, to go to the public vote.

From Monday to Friday, we spent time in each locality meeting our finalists and presenting the awards. Special thanks to the Men’s Shed Kelso for designing and making the trophies!

You can read about our finalists here!

Thank you to everyone who was involved, from nominating your Volunteer Community Champion to voting – you all played a massive part in the success of the awards demonstrating just how amazing our Borders communities are!

We look forward to seeing you all for Volunteers’ Week 2025!

Team Volunteering

From 9.30 am on Tuesday 4 June, our team was at Berwickshire Marine Reserve participating in a Team Volunteering Day!

We started the morning with a beach clean, the litter collected from the beach was bagged, weighed and recorded then the information was submitted to Maritime UK. During the clean we recovered almost 200 cotton bud sticks! Did you know the data recorded from a beach clean influences Government policies? A recent example is the ban on wet wipes containing plastics.
Following the beach clean the team carried out shorewatch surveys, recording the marine life we saw and the data submitted to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. Sadly, the sudden torrential downpour cut our watch short and we didn't see any whales or dolphins, but we saw a whole host of different birds!
Thank you to Charlotte and the Berwickshire Marine Reserve for having us!
Team volunteering is a fantastic way not only to spend your corporate volunteering days, but also for team building! Is your organisation interested in a team volunteering day or does your charity need a team to volunteer? Get in touch with our Volunteering Team to find out how to get involved!
